This summary of Education Endowment Foundation findings will help schools to reflect on the purpose and possible impact of the pupil premium.

The pupil premium was introduced in 2010 by the Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition government to provide the means for schools to focus resource on disadvantaged pupils. By 2020, it is anticipated that £9bn will have been spent on it. However, as the Sutton Trust stated in 2015: "It is not what you spend, it is the way that you spend it, that's what gets results."

To understand the most appropriate use of the pupil premium and to tackle the challenge of the attainment gap it is important to understand the nature of the gap, and the factors most likely to help close it. In early 2018, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), established in 2011, published a report, based on six years of research. The following edited summary of EEF's findings will help schools to reflect on the purpose and possible impact of the pupil premium.
