CONNEXIONS: Conference tackles racism in Southwest

Mandeep Sandhu, anti-racism project co-ordinator at the partnership, said the 2001 census showed that Cornwall and Devon had the highest incidence of racism per ethnic population in Britain, even though the Black and minority ethnic (BME) population in the counties was less than one per cent.

"The aims of the conference were to look at the reality of day-to-day life for BME young people in the area," said Sandhu. "The citizenship agenda in schools is not meeting the need of raising race equality issues."

The conference was held in partnership with Young People Cornwall, which supports youth groups in the county. Connexions provided the anti-racism project with 5,000.
