Did I dream it, or are we due to see a child health strategy sometime soon? The Children's Plan said a health strategy would be published in spring 2008, but it's been delayed. However, the 2004 National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services is still in place; child health is a priority area in the NHS Operating Framework and issues that impact on children and their health remain highly topical. For instance, the General Medical Council (GMC) is updating its confidentiality guidance for doctors, an issue that is always relevant to patients who are under 18.
Is it just about child patients? In 2006, the GMC published Good Medical Practice, its core guidance for doctors who are registered with the council, which is enhanced by the child-specific document 0-18: Guidance for All Doctors. The latter includes a section on the principles of confidentiality as they should apply to child patients. The broader GMC guidance covers children and adults.
