Concerns raised over care staff

Social Care
Management of staff in children's care services across Wales needs to be addressed, according to the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW).

In the organisation's first annual report since launching last April, CSSIW identified the key areas of concern in children's homes to be recruitment and suitability of staff, ongoing support and training, staffing levels, placement planning, behaviour and medication management and record keeping.

In fostering services, areas for improvement included staff recruitment and selection procedures, foster placement agreements between placing authorities and carers, reviews of foster carers, suitability, training for carers and foster carers case records.

In children's day care services common areas identified for improvement included risk management, the managing of staff and record keeping.

Chief inspector Rob Pickford said: "There must be more consistency in delivering some of the basics of care and support and in the approach to assessment, care planning and review."
