Concern after 'progressive' Burrowes denied chance to reform youth justice

An overhaul of the personnel in charge of youth justice has led to a shift in mood among leading figures in the sector.

With doubts persisting over the future of the Youth Justice Board (YJB), concerns have been raised about the decision not to hand the youth justice brief to David Burrowes, the former shadow justice minister for the Conservatives.

Instead, the position has gone to Tory MP Crispin Blunt, a former Army officer. Fellow Conservative MP Jonathan Djanogly will be responsible for, among other things, family justice.

Burrowes, widely perceived in the sector as a progressive politician, told CYP Now he was in the dark as to whether his youth justice paper, developed over the past two years, will now be published.

He added that he is disappointed not to have had the chance to push ahead with changes.
