Complaint-driven checks trigger concerns

4 mins read Early Years Inspections
A huge rise in childcare provider inspections prompted by complaints has left some questioning the entire Ofsted regulation process.

For several months, the early years sector has been expressing its concerns about complaint-driven Ofsted inspections and the impact they have on settings' business reputation and staff.

The heads of both the Pre-school Learning Alliance and the National Day Nurseries Association have led calls for the inspectorate to explain the extent of the issue, but to no avail.

They reveal that the number of Ofsted inspections prompted by a complaint have risen six-fold from 188 unscheduled inspections in September 2012, to 719 unprompted inspections in July.
