Politics has been a feature of Roy Perry's life for more than 50 years. The chair of the Local Government Association (LGA) children and young people board since last September studied politics at the University of Exeter, becoming a senior lecturer in the subject, before being elected as a Conservative councillor in 1979.
Although never entering Westminster - the closest he got was unsuccessfully contesting the Swansea West constituency in 1992 - Perry spent a decade as a member of the European Parliament and since 2013 has been leader of Hampshire County Council. His passion for politics has also been passed on to his daughter, Caroline Noakes, who was elected Conservative MP for Romsey and Southampton North at the 2010 general election.
