Children's Rights: Sandwell gets its own commissioner

Sandwell Council is set to become the only local authority in England with its own children's commissioner.

The council has appointed Maureen Winn Oakley, a solicitor with abackground in domestic violence, to take on the role. She secured thejob after an interview process that included being grilled by primaryschool pupils, and will start in September. Winn Oakley said: "I intendto ensure children's views are listened to and taken seriously byeveryone at all levels."

The appointment comes only weeks after Sandwell's children's serviceswere criticised by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (ChildrenNow, 5-11 July). Oxfordshire was previously the only council in Englandwith its own children's commissioner but had to scrap the post earlierthis year due to lack of money.
