Children and young people with mental health problems require timely and appropriate support, yet research finds that on average they face a 10-year delay between when their problems first emerge and when they receive help (Khan, L 2015).

There are several factors that contribute to this delay such as low mental health literacy, long waiting times, high thresholds and challenges navigating the system. In addition, there continue to be significant gaps in data about service use and outcomes which make it difficult for local commissioners to design and deliver effective services.

The ongoing pressure on budgets across the system has resulted in long-term divestment in preventative and early intervention services, placing a significant strain on specialist NHS children and young people’s mental health services. These services support those with enduring, complex, and severe mental health difficulties but have historically struggled to manage demand and currently only meet the needs of a fraction of those with a diagnosable mental health problem.
