Children's centres: Derbyshire unveils second wave plans

A former pub will be transformed into a children's centre as part of Derbyshire's second wave of centres.

The county council has agreed locations for 23 new children's centresand is on the verge of finalising a further six. It will have 42 centresin place by 2008 after building 13 in the first phase of its childrencentre programme.

Most phase one centres were based on Sure Start programmes and earlyexcellence centres. The new centres will make the most of existingprovision including schools, family support centres and communitycentres, said Labour councillor Anne Western, the council's cabinetmember for children's services.

One centre in Chesterfield will be developed with a local voluntaryorganisation that supports children with additional needs. Another willbe based in a former pub.
