Children's Centres: 4Children plans radical expansion

1 min read
Children's charity 4Children is to expand its operations dramatically by developing and running children's centres across the UK.

It plans to set up nine centres for children aged up to 16 because the Government has so far failed develop a national model of this kind.

The charity will work in partnership with local authorities and hopes to have the centres up and running in late 2007.

Chief executive Anne Longfield said: "We are looking to establish and run up to nine centres, one in each region, for children from zero right through to 16, in or around one site.

"Services would include children's centres, family support for young children, out-of-school provision, youth provision and all the wraparound services that accompany these."

She said the charity had held back from such a move in the past because it preferred to help others with existing projects. But it has now decided to play a more direct role because it believes not enough is being done to develop centres for older children.
