Children in residential care need support beyond 18

At a time when many forms of care have received an injection of funding and ministerial time, the lack of attention given to children’s residential care has been both telling and concerning. It has inevitably led to a policy vacuum that only now looks likely to be addressed with the expected publication of Sir Martin Narey’s review of residential child care later this summer.

Sir Martin will certainly deliver a clear set of conclusions and recommendations for what needs to change. It is vital that the government acts on these quickly to provide a long-term vision for residential care that recognises the positive role it can play in improving outcomes for some of the most vulnerable children and young people (see Special Report).
