Children Bill: MPs criticise dilution of commissioner role

The Government has reversed changes made to the bill by the House of Lords, including removing references to the "rights" of young people.

Hilton Dawson, Labour MP for Lancaster and Wyre, accused youth minister Margaret Hodge of "watering down" the power of the commissioner.

"There are elements in Government that do not want to be challenged by a powerful advocate for children," he said.

The Government amendments were passed that delete the word "rights" from the phrase "to take account of their rights, views and interests", which relates to the responsibilities of the commissioner towards children, and to the reports that the commissioner will make to the education secretary.
