Children Bill: Laming criticises proposal dilution

The Government should not have given in to councils' demands for flexibility in the Children Bill, according to the man whose report into the death of Victoria Climbie sparked the reform of children's services.

Speaking exclusively to Children Now, Lord Laming said the DfES had been "too accommodating" with councils after it diluted proposals for children's directors and local safeguarding boards following sustained pressure from local authorities.

And he criticised plans for children's trusts, saying he had little idea of what their role was meant to be.

But he said he was happy with the main thrust of the Bill and claimed the imposition of a duty to co-operate on agencies was an "important milestone" that could help save the lives of children like Victoria.
