Childcare: Wales introduces spot inspections

The Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales has changed how childminders and children's homes are inspected.

From this week inspectors can make unannounced visits to childminders. This already happens in England. Inspections will usually take place beevery two years rather than annually.

For children's homes the inspection will follow a self-assessment by theservice provider. The focus of the inspection will vary depending onwhat issues are identified.

The new inspection process will focus much more on the day-to-dayexperiences of children using the services.

- Bilingual guidance on the changes is at www.csiw.wales.gov.uk.
