Childcare: Ofsted says training is key to quality

1 min read
Ofsted's director of early years says better staff training will ensure all children receive top-quality childcare and nursery education.

Maurice Smith, speaking exclusively to Children Now about the launch of a consultation on the future of early years inspection, said the type of staff behaviour highlighted by the BBC's recent undercover investigation into three private day nurseries would be "less likely" if workers were better trained and qualified.

The consultation proposes that little or no notice will be given before inspections of group childcare and funded nursery settings. It also proposes a significant reduction in the period of notice for childminders, while recognising the need to establish whether they will be in on the day of inspection.

But Smith cautioned against seeing inspection as the solution to all problems. "Everyone has a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of children and they can do that by being our eyes and ears when we are not there," he said.
