Childcare: Funding concerns threatening clubs

Thousands of out-of-school childcare clubs face funding worries and an uncertain future, an evaluation of one of the UK's largest childcare programmes has revealed.

The Out of School Hours Childcare Programme saw the allocation of 285m in lottery cash and the creation of 468,500 childcare places.However, a five-year study, to be published in full next month, showed17 per cent of clubs closed while 19 per cent operate at a loss. Ofthose that expected to break even next year, half said they could onlycontinue with ongoing grant funding, which is currently notavailable.

Meanwhile a survey of local authority information services by 4Childrenand the National Association of Children's Information Services foundsustainability was the top concern for providers and children'scentres.

The findings were unveiled at 4Children's conference last week.
