His comments, made during a visit to a children's centre in Somerset, came after the union Unite argued that cuts in funding see one health visitor lose their job every day.
Johnson said: "Because I have been education minister and am now the health minister, I can see the need for health visitors to play a more active role in children's centres. They are the first port of call for many parents."
His call comes after CYP Now last week reported how a health team at a West Sussex children's centre is facing potential job cuts because the cash-strapped local primary care trust cannot afford to continue it in its current form (CYP Now, 5-11 September).
