Childcare champions to advise parents

1 min read Early Years
Community "childcare champions" that help parents access and pay for childcare could be introduced across England following successful pilots in five areas.

The National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) recruited the parent volunteers after establishing multi-agency networks in Leeds, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Peterborough, Shropshire and Walsall.

The champions gave parents information about childcare at the school gates, childrens' centre open days and job centre drop-in sessions.

Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the NDNA, said the initiative, part of a Department for Children, Schools and Families-backed project looking at ways to engage parents could work on a national scale.

"Communicating with hard-to-reach groups about the benefits of high-quality provision is vital in achieving the government's vision for childcare and we think community childcare champions are an ideal way to do this effectively," she said.
