Child Protection: Children put at risk due to lack of staff

Hundreds of children may be at risk of abuse because of staff shortages at Lincolnshire County Council, according to figures revealed last week.

The council has yet to look into 243 alleged cases of abuse, despite a pledge to investigate every report of a child feared to be at risk within 24 hours.

In addition, it hasn't yet taken further action on 320 cases where investigations found a problem.

"We recognise the scale of the problem in our services for children," said Matt Bukowski, director of Lincolnshire social services.

"The numbers of unallocated and unassessed children's cases are unacceptably high and we are working very hard to put the situation right. Our biggest problem is having the staff in post to deal with them." The council said it was taking steps to deal with the problems.
