Careers: Playworker

3 mins read Careers Play
You don't need a formal qualification to become a playworker, as Charlotte Goddard discovers.

What is a playworker?

Playworkers plan, organise and take part in play and leisure activities for fourto 16-year-olds. They work in a wide range of organisations in the public, private and voluntary sector, including after-school clubs, holiday play schemes, women's refuges, prisons and children's homes.

What qualifications do you need for the role?

Playwork doesn't require a formal qualification. "This is a career path people can take from scratch," says Lesli Godfrey, senior programme manager for playwork education, training and qualifications at Skills Active. "You can start by putting a toe in the water and then decide you want to move up and be the person in charge."
