1. You need plenty of patience.
There's more to teaching than delivering a lesson. "You must be able to listen, help and give guidance, not only with learning but also with the personal elements, for example, friendships and worries," says Kate Underwood, reception teacher at Sutton Benger Church of England Primary School in Sutton Benger, Wiltshire.
"You must also be open to challenges, from new initiatives and ideas down to deciding who will feed the class guinea pig," she adds.
Niki Matthews, a teaching assistant at the same school, adds that while having patience is invaluable, so too is having a sense of humour and really caring for the children you teach.
