Do childminders need to be registered?
All childminders who look after one or more children under the age of eight, in their home for more than a total of two hours a day, for a fee must be registered by Ofsted. Those looking after children who are five and under must be on the Early Years Register, while those looking after children between the ages of five and seven must be on the Childcare Register.
Most childminders are registered with both. Childminders must undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check. Those who care only for children aged over eight, for example before and after school, do not have to be registered, but the National Childminding Association (NCMA) recommends they register on the voluntary Childcare Register.
