Call for police to end use of Tasers

Youth Work
Scotland's children's commissioner has backed a call for Strathclyde Police to suspend the use of Tasers.

There are currently no restrictions to stop use of the 50,000-volt weapons on under-18s.

The commissioner argues that both children and police officers would benefit from clear guidelines on their use.

Tam Baillie, Scotland's commissioner for children and young people, said: "Tasers are potentially lethal and the UN has made it clear that their use on children is unacceptable. Arming beat officers with Tasers brings them into our communities and risks them being used in situations when lesser force would suffice."
