In Freedom to Lead, a consultation brief sent out to councils last week, the LGA sets out why inspections should be overhauled to save cash and free councils from bureaucracy.
It suggests the Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA), which was introduced earlier this year, needs to be slimmed down and to focus more on assessing whole places as opposed to individual organisations.
The consultation also questions whether there should be a national indicator set and suggests that an end to ringfenced funding could allow councils greater power to tackle local issues.
Nick Easton, senior policy consultant at the LGA, claimed that the CAA is unfit for purpose.
