Briefing: Research Report - Teenage abortion

1 min read
A report from the University of Southampton contends that better access to education on abortion is needed before pregnancies occur.

Young women tend to make decisions about whether to terminate an unplanned pregnancy before visiting health professionals, a new report says.

The survey of young women aged 17 and under also found that abortion needs to be "de-stigmatised" and that areas of inadequate service provision, such as access to family planning and sexual health services, need to be addressed.

The report for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation said that while more than four out of 10 conceptions among 15- to 17-year-old women in England, Scotland and Wales end in abortion, there are wide variations between areas and there is a lower proportion of abortions in socially disadvantaged areas.
