Briefing: Research Report - Safety in care

Children and young people in care have voiced concerns about safety. They want authorities to prevent bullying, and carry out checks on staff.

Young people in care want more unannounced inspection visits from authorities and increased monitoring visits from social services in a bid to improve their safety, a new report has revealed. They also want social workers and inspectors to listen to what children tell them, and expulsion for persistent bullies at school.

The report, Safe from Harm, has been presented to children's minister Margaret Hodge and Stephen Ladyman, the parliamentary under-secretary for community, who will decide whether or not to implement the children's recommendations.

Safe from Harm, which was compiled for the Commission for Social Care Inspection by Dr Roger Morgan, the children's rights director for England, found that children in care have unique concerns about the dangers they face.
