Research has looked into the use of independent advocates and family supporters to help children involved in family group conferences.

Independent advocates and family members should help children understandquestions and help them put forward their views in family groupconferences, according to a study for the Brighton and Hove Children'sFund Partnership and the Brighton and Hove Daybreak Family GroupConferencing Project.

The research, Under the Table or At the Table? Supporting Children andFamilies in Family Group Conferences, looked at what helps children andfamilies take part in family group conferences, which involve familymembers, friends and other adults meeting to find solutions to problems,with the support of professionals. Its main focus was on whetherindependent advocates or family supporters help children.

Independent advocates are professionals whose job it is to supportchildren during family group conferences, while family supporters are afamily member or friend who is known to the children and acts as anadvocate.
