Brexit fallout will demand innovation in mental health

The Future in Mind strategy and accompanying £1.4bn government cash injection has raised collective ambitions for child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).

Measures in Future in Mind offer the chance for CAMHS to finally shed its "Cinderella service" tag. Expansion of psychological therapies, the introduction of waiting time standards and increased support for infant and maternal mental health should improve provision. Perhaps the most crucial measure is the funding to help children's health and social care commissioners redesign the CAMHS system through local transformation plans (see Mental Health Special Report). These plans are enabling commissioners and providers to rethink how and where services are delivered, bringing greater integration and coordination to CAMHS across areas, which should in turn deliver a much needed reduction in waiting times for young people to access services.
