Big interview: Anatomy of a YOT inspection - Liz Calderbank, assistant chief inspector of probation, HM Inspectorate of Probation

Until recently, inspectors had steered clear of youth offending teams (YOTs), which first appeared in 2000, in order to give them time to develop fully. But that honeymoon period is over and YOTs now face regular inspections.

These are co-ordinated by the HM Inspectorate of Probation but are actually the work of a coalition of Government inspectors. "The make-up of the inspection team reflects the make-up of YOTs," says Liz Calderbank, the woman in charge of YOT inspections at the probation inspectorate. "Along with ourselves there are other inspectors including the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary, Estyn, Ofsted and the Social Services Inspectorate."
