Big interview: A blow to the smacking ban

As the torchbearers in the campaign to ban smacking, the NSPCC must have been disappointed by MPs' rejection of such a move.

Wes Cuell, the charity's director of services to children and young people, is understandably frustrated. "It's a sad day for children," he sighs.

"There's been a powerful debate and it has been recognised that smacking is wrong but the compromise is deeply flawed. It allows you to smack but you cannot hurt. As time goes on this clause will be recognised as nonsense."

But while the Government's rejection of an outright ban, as proposed by the House of Lords, may be a setback for the organisation, Cuell insists the fight is far from over.
