Benefits blow for under-25s

Social Care Youth Work
Youth charity Centrepoint is urging the government to exempt unemployed young people in supported accommodation from cuts to housing benefits.

Plans announced in the budget mean that anyone claiming Job Seeker'sAllowance (JSA) for more than a year will have their housing benefit cutby 10 per cent from 2013.

But Jenny Monsort, policy officer at Centrepoint, said many under-25salready struggle to survive, because their weekly JSA payment is only50.

"Young people are keen to work but it's extremely difficult with currentyouth unemployment rates," she said.

"This will particularly hit young people in supported accommodation. Therisk is that 50 will not be enough, they will be unable to paythe rent and will become homeless again," Monsort warned.
