Behind the Inspection Ratings: Alternative education provision

5 mins read Education Ofsted
Inconsistent standards of alternative education offered to children and young people outside of mainstream school settings has led Ofsted to call for this provision to be more closely scrutinised.

Alternative education can make a difference to pupils who struggle in traditional classroom environments. However, there is ongoing concern about the quality and accountability of provision, especially learning taking place outside of schools or pupil referral units (PRUs).

Alternative education - as defined by Ofsted - encompasses a wide range of activity often involving the chance to gain practical work experience or skills. It is part of pupils' regular timetable, but generally takes place away from the school site and is not led by school staff.

Run by a mix of public, private and voluntary sector providers, it can range from a network of specialist centres run by a national charity to a small garage taking on just one pupil.
