Back Page: Hound - Between the lines in the past week's media

A yellow school bus scheme would reduce congestion and increase safety, say its advocates. A well publicised report from the Sutton Trust made powerful recommendations to introduce a national scheme of big yellow buses. Just like they have in the USA and Hebden Bridge.

Hebden Bridge, where a pilot took place, is a distinctive place in the Yorkshire Pennines not noted for being typical of anywhere except itself.

So it was interesting to get hold of a copy of the full report and find out what the children who took part in the trial thought.

Sadly, they are silent. The 40-page report has extensive analysis, costings, argument and counter-argument. But there is no expression of opinion from children and young people. A summary identifies and costs the benefits to parents and the benefits to society. But again the voice of children is not heard.

This is curious. Why would anyone propose a service without asking the users what they thought of it? If they did ask them, why aren't their views in the report?
