PE or not PE? That is the question posed by media coverage of a brace of research reports. "Is PE a waste of time?" asked The Times, going to town on a study that suggests running around a muddy sports field may not make one jot of difference to some children because the energy they use is determined by their genes.

Bad news for the Government's efforts to cut childhood obesity. Butwait. Before you chuck out the netballs, take heed of The Mail onSunday's dire warning. "Yob culture is being fuelled by a failure topromote sport in schools," it reports.

Oxford University researchers found depriving boys of regular PEincreases their risk of under-achieving and drifting into crime. Headteachers can be reassured: PE's no good for slobs but great foryobs.

- The internet is a wonderful arena for open, democratic debate. Noreally. And just occasionally you can be pleasantly surprised.

Take The Sun's online discussion forum, which currently carries the "hottopic" thread "Teenage mums ... who's to blame?" Views range from theold chestnut that girls get pregnant to get council houses, to thedownright flippant "teenage dads, of course". But there's plenty ofsensible stuff, including some frank contributions from teenage mothers'so it's well worth checking out.
