Lil' Tel referred to the expansion of children's centres and extendedschools and asked what was being done to ensure the survival oflong-standing quality voluntary and private childcare centres.
Hughes stressed the importance of the private and voluntary sectors tothe success of the children's centres and extended schools schemes."Please speak to your local authority who will be able to best advisehow you might get involved," she said.
Not quite. Lil' Tel got scathing. "The minister assumes that as achildcare provider I want to be involved in children's centres orextended schools. I do not." Many providers want to flourishindependently of government initiatives, Lil' Tel pointed out.
