Attainment: DfES struggles with own targets

The Department for Education and Skills is struggling to meet its own targets, including raising standards in English and maths among 11-year-olds and narrowing the attainment gap between children in care and their peers.

The department's 2006/07 annual report, issued last week, also revealstargets to cut truancy, reduce teenage pregnancies and reduce the numberof young people not in education, employment or training are allslipping.

But the report, which also details spending and actions undertaken bythe department, shows targets on getting parents back into work andgetting more children involved in sport at school are on track.
