ASYLUM: Social workers vow to keep fighting

1 min read
The British Association of Social Workers is consulting lawyers to see how far it can go to scupper a controversial clause in the Asylum and Immigration Bill, Children Now has learned.

The Bill, which would allow the children of failed asylum seekers to be separated from their families and taken into care, passed its final Commons hurdle last week.

Ian Johnston, director of the association, will take the fight to the Lords but is already looking at how to evade some of the Bill's provisions.

"We think this is an ethical issue because the Bill is contrary to the interests of children," he said."We have discussed the issue on our standards and ethics board and we are working on some advice we will give members.

We are consulting our lawyers.

"Obviously, the association couldn't advise members to break the law. But there are other things we can do. We are thinking through the issues and we've been in touch with the Association of Directors of Social Services and the General Social Care Council.
