Askham Grange Open Prison, Yorkshire

1 min read Early Years
What is it? A 22-place nursery that offers full-time daycare for the children of prisoners and of families living in the local area. It is part of the mother-and-baby unit at the prison site and caters for children from birth to three years old.

Why is it important? It allows prisoners to do community, voluntary or paid work outside of the prison. As well as helping reduce the risk of reoffending, this is a vital step towards their resettlement in the community. The nursery also provides places for children in Askham and the surrounding community, as well as for those of prison staff. Askham Grange governor Marcella Goligher says: "The nursery plays a key role in the rehabilitation of our resident mums. We know that family and building positive relationships are major factors in the resettlement of women and reducing reoffending."

Who runs it? The nursery has been based at the prison since 2004. Last year, its management was taken over by Barnardo's. Martin Narey, chief executive of the charity and a previous head of the prison service, says: "The fact that parents from the local community and prison office staff choose to send their children to this fantastic nursery is an indication of the high standards that are in place."
