I am worried about the amount of time some of the young women I am working with spend on social networking sites. I fear they are giving away too much personal information.
During a recent training session with young people, our workers were shocked by the amount of personal information that young people were providing on Facebook, including their addresses and phone numbers, or where they were at any given time.
There are some very good tools you can access via the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, to help young people understand the dangers of disclosing personal information on social media sites.
The young people attending our training session were shocked and had no idea that they could be putting themselves at risk.
Increasing security levels, not “friending” people they don’t know and being mindful of what information they are displaying, including photographs, all helps.
