Two older members of the youth centre have been made junior youth workers. I support this in theory, but they turn up at any time, use their phones constantly and behave immaturely. What can I do?
This behaviour will have an impact on the culture of a place, particularly where young people are concerned. It is irresponsible to put young people in positions of responsibility without providing them with support and guidance. They should know what is professionally acceptable and what is not.
Some will think there is no problem with having your phone on all the time and texting during working hours. But actually, it shows a lack of concentration and disrespect for the task and clients.
It sounds as if they have not been sufficiently inducted or mentored into their roles.
If the centre manager has not noticed this, you should mention it. This is sometimes harder work than you think – but it is what youth work is about.
