I work in a children’s centre and am worried about one of the mums. She often turns up late and at times seems a little drunk. Her children appear tired and sometimes hungry.

The impact of alcohol-using parents on children can cause problems as children grow older so it is vital to tackle this now.

If there is a good relationship with the mother, have a member of staff she knows and trusts have a quiet and sensitive word, explaining the concerns, but also pointing out what is working well that has been observed. If she is engaged, assign an outreach or community family worker, to assess what is going on.
