Arts: Feargal Sharkey to front music studio expansion

1 min read
A network of music studios is to be set up across England and Wales to give young musicians access to rehearsal spaces.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is concerned that 43 per cent of young people who want to participate in musical activity cannot do so because of a lack of facilities or prohibitive costs.

It has asked Feargal Sharkey, former chair of the department's Live Music Forum, to set up the network. No funding has yet been committed to the project, although discussions have taken place with the Treasury about using money from unclaimed assets.

As well as arranging funding, Sharkey will be responsible for determining how many "rehearsal spaces" will be created. This will be done in partnership with the music industry, local and regional government, equipment suppliers, and the Music Manifesto Board.

The proposed network follows a pilot in Wrexham that involved the Music Industries Association providing equipment and was used by 700 young people in 2006.

Andy Williams, project manager at the Welsh Music Foundation, which co-ordinated the Wrexham pilot, said the initiative was "extremely successful".
