Are we heading towards another lost generation?

On 1 March, I marked two years in post as children's commissioner for England. I have been reflecting on what has stayed high on the children's policy agenda over that time and what has emerged apparently out of the blue.

My remit covers all children and young people, but it has a focused regard for those who would otherwise go unheard. Therefore, the work passing through my office has a particular flavour. I called for calm and accuracy in the nation’s responses to last August’s disturbances. 

We are here to say uncomfortable as well as affirming things to the nation on children seeking asylum here; on social care and family courts systems that need to see proceedings through children’s eyes; on the treatment of those who offend and their mental health and wellbeing in secure settings; and on ensuring the education system meets the child’s needs as well as society’s.
