As a prelude, hundreds of school, college and university students converged on city centres around the country last Wednesday and Friday, including Coventry, Sheffield, Leeds, Leicester and Belfast.
In London, students brought traffic to a halt on Wednesday as they marched from Parliament Square to Downing Street.
Many protesters had walked out of school, despite locked gates and letters that had been sent to parents forbidding pupils from leaving school premises.
Eight people, two of them aged 15 and 16, were arrested when police broke up a demonstration of between 200 and 300 young people in the centre of Leicester on Friday.
