Anger over new play staff rules

Play professionals have expressed anger at changes in staffing regulations for holiday playschemes.

New Oftsed rules mean the schemes must be registered and have fullyqualified staff to take in children under eight years old. This wouldexclude temporary staff with a basic play qualification, such asstudents on holiday. A number of play professionals have branded thefull qualifications unnecessary.

"Most people working on playschemes are full-time university studentsand don't want to do a full qualification," said Shelly Newstead,founder of play training provider Common Threads.
