Local Sure Start programmes are working, according to the latest evaluation of the scheme (News, 30 June-6 July). But will the mainstreaming of Sure Start via children's centres risk losing the gains made so far?
"I see children's centres as a testament to the effectiveness of Sure Start Programmes," says Stephen Burke, director of the Daycare Trust. "Sure Start has achieved better outcomes for children and families; children's centres will make this available to many more families."
He is not alone in this view. "What's exciting about children's centres is that they are based on a lot of learning from Sure Start," says Trish Ross, programme manager of Mansfield Ravensdale Sure Start in Nottinghamshire.
