The death of 17-year-old Shafilea Ahmed from Warrington has turned the spotlight on the disturbing subject of honour killings and the pressures facing teenagers growing up in the midst of two cultures.

Shafilea's body was discovered on 4 February, hidden in undergrowth near a flooded river in Cumbria, five months after she disappeared from her home.

On a family trip to Pakistan a year ago, Shafilea swallowed bleach and suffered severe internal injuries, apparently after being the subject of a proposal of marriage. Her parents, who deny that the trip was for the purpose of an arranged marriage, were arrested at Christmas on suspicion of kidnapping and subsequently released on bail.
