Analysis: Domestic violence - Is intervention the best medicine?

Doctors can become privy to a lot of sensitive information, including the possibility of domestic violence - either involving children or witnessed by them. But what options do they have in such cases? Jennifer Taylor talks to doctors to find out.

Few GPs would disagree that domestic violence is a health issue for children, physically and mentally. But some say the profession is poor at reporting and recording the problem (News, 28 April-4 May).

"I think it's a training issue, and probably involves a lack of awareness about the link between domestic violence and other issues, such as child protection," says Dr Laurence Knott, a GP and named doctor for child protection in Enfield.

Dr Krishna Korlipara, a GP in Bolton and member of the General Medical Council, says there are "huge variations, as in any profession" when it comes to GPs reporting domestic violence.
