ANALYSIS: ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR - Youth workers are not police

Youth work and Connexions have a key role to play in the Government's strategy to curb antisocial behaviour, as laid out in the Respect and Responsibility white paper published by the Home Office last week.

It outlines the importance of youth work in getting young people to engage with their communities, in helping them to develop constructive interests and to deal with issues that affect them. It confirms the Government's intention to expand diversionary activities that are targeted at crime hotspots.

Most practitioners would say this is only right. Many, however, are likely to be less comfortable with other aspects of the white paper, which precedes legislation due to be introduced in Parliament within the next few weeks.
